First Holy Communion
Jesus said, 'I am the living bread come down from Heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.
(Jn 6:51)
Children in Year 3 upwards can receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The children prepare thoroughly for this Sacrament. The preparation takes place within the parish but is supported by work within school. During Religious Education lessons in school, the children study the Last Supper when Jesus shared his last meal with the disciples. They look at the breaking of the bread and how this is similar to the celebration of the Mass. By examining the words of Jesus at the Last Supper and the priest at Mass, they learn to appreciate that we are present with Jesus every time we go to Mass.
The children receive Holy Communion usually in late June and then we celebrate this sacrament with a special First Holy Communion Mass within school, this is attended by the Y2, Y3 and Y4 children. For the Year 2 children it is an opportunity to look ahead at exciting opportunity of undertaking their First Holy Communion in parish during Y3 and for the Y4 children it is a wonderful chance to reaffirm their commitment.
